Who Is Togo Love?
"I may not be better than my fellow artists, but, at least, I am different."
A born NYer, Togo Love is a long-time resident of Greenwich Village. His first solo art show was at the age of 17 in NY where he sold 3 paintings and 2 sculptures. With scholarships he attended the Art Students League and NY School Of Visual Art but dropped out of both.
“I was always getting censored, forbidden to show my work for a variety of reasons. Even in High School. In my ‘Picasso’ phase, I painted a picture of Greenwich Village back in the 60s…I happened to include a prostitute way over in the corner. The school board went nuts. In the yearbook, they put a photo of some football player pretending to paint my portrait of Eric Clapton! In the 70s, one of my plays was shut down because of bomb threats. Nowadays, the PC police are censoring me off Social Media while galleries seem afraid to show some of my series due to protests from both left and right factions!”
In his early years, he exhibited in over 20 galleries in NYC and had shown in various festivals and museums including MOMA NYC, MOMA Australia, Russia, South America, Germany.
Throughout several decades of working in Film and the Performing Arts as a multi-award-winning and critically acclaimed Artistic Director of several innovative NYC theater companies, he wrote, directed, and designed over 100 productions and countless performances. He's directed several motion pictures with the Royal Shakespeare Company and also received over a dozen awards in various categories, including a Life Achievement Award in Theater and Best Director Off-Broadway three times.
But he’s never stopped working on his Fine Art.
“In 1996, I got tired of my lucrative painting career. Everyone paints. I shut down my studio in SOHO. Wanting to belong to the new century, I taught myself to use a computer. It has enabled me to create far more Art. Well, that led to more protest this time from the traditional Art World just because I used a new tool in the box. It’s been a struggle to get accepted for that reason now…to the extent that I consider myself an outsider. That’s ok.
“My motto is taken from an old French philosopher…’I may not be better than my peers, but at least I am different.’
“By using a dialectical process I’ve named, ‘Psychological Realism’ I like to deliver sometimes absurd, humorous critiques of the Art World, or satirical commentaries on Political Correctness in today’s society.
